Reconciliation discourse: the case of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), according to Annelies Verdoo-laege, can be considered to be 'one of the symbols of South Africa's change to liberty' and 'has become widely regarded as a model of how societies deal with traumatic pasts' (1). Verdoolaege's central proposition concerns the development of the hegemony of a discourse of reconciliation and the power of that discourse. She claims that 'the exertion of power will predominantly be regarded as a positive and highly productive aspect' (3).
