Discourse analysis: bridging frameworks or cultivating practices?

This essay responds to Gee's article in which he proposes that discourse analysis is an approach that can bridge frames. I begin by elaborating a difference in academic cultures among scholars who identify as discourse analysts. I argue that a cultural grounding is built into discourse analysis and study of communication more generally. The essay concludes by offering the idea of cultivating practices as an alternative to the idea of bridging frameworks.
