David Bruce (1855–1931) brucellosis

(Sir) David Bruce, with a Scottish background, was born in Melbourne on 29 May 1855 and educated in Edinburgh where he qualified in 1881, joining the army in 1883. He was posted to Malta where he identified the causal organism of Malta fever (1886) in the spleen of dying patients; it became known after him as Brucella melitensis. He also demonstrated the infectivity of the tsetse fly as a cause of trypanosomiasis in Africa. His wife, Lady Bruce, was an accomplished microscopist and helped him in all his scientific endeavours.
