Cohomological properties of invariant quotients of affine spaces

We compute the Chow and the cohomology rings of varieties that are obtained as the GIT-quotient of affine spaces by actions of reductive groups. We prove the vanishing of the higher cohomology groups of numerically effective line bundles. As an application we prove a numerical effectiveness result for direct images of numerically effective line bundles.
