Recently, drones (or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)) are gettingincreasing attention and taking mobile computing to a newera. Due to the support of highly advanced technologies, soonthey might be ubiquitous and networks of drones might be usedin providing civilian drone services. In this paper, we providea survey of drone services and applications, data managementfor drones, data services using drones, distributed computingtrends fuelled by drones and a range of human-drone interactionresearch which is useful if drones are to regularly serve nontechnicalusers, while highlighting the specific concerns in datamanagement and airborne Internet-of-Things (IoT) computinginfrastructure. We present concepts such as drones-as-a-serviceand fly-in, fly-out computing infrastructure, and note data managementand systemdesign issues that arise in these situations.Issues of Big Data arising from such applications, optimising theconfiguration of airborne and ground infrastructure to providethe bestQoS andQoE, situation-awareness, scalability, reliability,scheduling for efficiency, interaction with users and dronesusing different methods are noted.
