摘要

When studying how construction has developed in the greater Stockholm area, one can see a very clear link between the extension of track-bound traffic and the location of new housing and light industrial areas. It is not uncommon for railways, tramways or underground systems to first be constructed and then be followed by the development of the surrounding areas. Stockholm's international airport, Arlanda, is an exception. It took forty years from the opening of the airport to the day the railway arrived - and even then it was quite unique for Sweden as a privately financed investment project. Located in a thinly populated perimeter of Stockholm county about 40 km outside the city, it was not identified during the first decades as being a subject for coordinated regional planning.
