摘要

The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is the most widely used automatic tracking system currently around the world in maritime industry. Most frequently, the AIS is used on ships and by the vessel traffic services (VTS). It enables the identification, tracking and monitoring of vessels by providing real-time vessel movement data and preset static information. Recently, many scholars are also tending to use the AIS data for analyzing and research. With the popularity of AIS and the improvement of data quality, data mining based on AIS data has become a research hotspot in recent years. It is widely used in traffic observation and statistics (Ristic et al., 2008), maritime traffic characteristics analysis (Wijaya, W. M. and Nakamura, Y., 2013), and ship traffic risk, etc. As designed for real time communication, the update rate of the AIS data can reach to per 2 seconds. The total amount of data then can become very large. According to the data collected in this paper, the data amount of a specific sea area (one area near Yangtze River estuary) is up to 75,000 KB per hour. Thus, whether for the traditional ship statistic issue, monitoring applications, or the academic research aimed use, the storage of AIS data is an important problem to be solved.
