This study seeks to examine whether systematic attempts are made by organizations to retain the knowledge acquired by employees over the course of their working lives. Over the course of a long working career an employee may have a large a amount of experience, skill, and knowledge accumulated which the organization does not utilize. Retirement is often a major change in the life of each individual. A qualitative method, based on snowball sampling, eight people, four women, and four men where interviewd - all of whom had held positions of responsibility prior to their retirement. The main subject of the study was to assess whether employees generally believe themselves to possess important knowledge following retirement, which could have been retained for continued use by their former organization. The study also explores whether organizations can be better prepared for the retirement of their employees. The research question is what becomes of the accumulated knowledge of employees following their retirement. The results indicate that not enough emphasis is currently placed on by organization in order to capture employees knowledge prior to their retirement even though most of them help to train their successors.
