SPORT GOVERNANCE IN JAMAICA: PERCEPTION AND ADHERENCE TO PRACTICES OF GOVERNANCE

The overall purpose of this study was to evaluate the Jamaica Hockey Federation on their governance practices. A sequential explanatory mixed methodology design was used to guide the study. The findings suggested that several of the Jamaica Hockey Federation's members were unaware of the organization's strategic plans but were aware of the annual plans. They also believed that the Federation's greatest strength lies with the hosting of the School's competition, which speaks to youth development. The principles of good governance as per evaluation guide are being adhered to by the Jamaica Hockey Federation. However more stringent measures will have to be put in place while others must be reinforced. Strategic plans must go through a process of evaluation on a regular basis. In order to do so there must be measurable indicators and benchmarks that have been set with the objectives. Based on the finding and their implications, a recommendation offered is for the Board to enlist the assistance of experts as consultants especially in developing strategic plans.
