摘要

To resist uplift forces, different types of foundation are used according to situation and functional purpose. In such cases, uplift capacity of the provided foundation is the main design parameter. A large number of works both theoretical and experimental had been reported on different types of foundation under uplift forces. However, in some cases, shallow foundations may be subjected to bear pulling loads. Behaviours of shallow foundations under uplift loads have drawn little attention of researchers. In an experimental orogramme, undertaken by the authors, axial uplift on model block foundation, keeping inside hollow for the purpose of increasing self-weight of block by putting extra load inside, embedded in dry sand were carried out to assess the effect of self-weight of foundation on uplift capacity and to measure the contribution of skin friction to resist uplift capacity. Graphical representations of test results showing variation of uplift resistance with influencing parameters, such as, self-weight of foundation, base area of foundation and depth of embedment etc are reported in this paper.
