The authors have discussed an interesting problem in their paper. For the situation considered by the authors, it is possible to develop an approximate theoretical solution to predict the characteristics of the step deformation and migration with the passage of time. An approximate linear solution for mining pits corresponding to the equilibrium type of regime was developed by the discusser (Gill 1994). That solution is extended herein for the situation of the backward step that the authors have discussed.
