Urban Storm Sewer Design: Approach in Consideration of Sediments

Sediment transport in sewers has different aspects to be analyzed and the paper describes primarily the transport at "limit deposition," the concept of "self-cleansing" sewers, and transport over small mobile (loose) beds. A new model for the transport at limit deposition criterion was developed based on physical concepts for extrapolation for sewers larger than 500 mm in diameter. This model leads to more economical solutions than previously developed best-fit deterministic models. The transport phenomenon over mobile beds is modeled based upon the classical dimensionless parameters of bed shear stress and transport using the Meyer-Peter and Mueller method normally used in the studies of alluvial channels. These studies were conducted using uniform sediment materials to understand the effect of sediment size on transport phenomena and then the effect of sediment gradation was focused upon.
