摘要

America is the best-housed nation on earth, yet for a growing and more economically diverse number of families, children, seniors and persons with disabilities, affordable housing in quality communities is illusionary. Today, 15.6 million households pay more than half their income for housing; there are many on waiting lists that have waited years for public housing or a Section 8 voucher. For local housing agencies, years of disinvestment now threaten the future of our more than 70-year investment in public housing. Current layoffs of critical staff and cutbacks in services are just one manifestation of a larger need to elevate housing and community development on the nation's agenda.
