摘要

In my previous article (see the May-June issue of the Journal of Housing and Community Development), I discussed common fire hazards and prevention methodology. Now, I would like to turn your attention to the concept of fire and life safety planning: having a plan to deal with virtually anything that could happen in one of your buildings.rnSmall or large, all plans follow a pretty simple format. What are my risks and what is the level of built-in protection within my building? How does that relate to evacuation? What do I do with my people, and how do I train them?rnThe obvious advantages to developing a fire and life safety plan is to get folks to safety and minimize damage in the event of an emergency. The less obvious advantages are raising the level of confidence and comfort for your tenants, particularly for the ones at more risk due to physical limitations. Having such a plan in place will also greatly reduce all of those concerned phone calls about what did or didn't occur in the event of a false alarm.
