U.S. Conference of Mayors Releases Foreclosure Resource

The U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) has issued a new survey report examining local government strategies for dealing with the ongoing foreclosure crisis: "Vacant and Abandoned Properties: Survey and Best Practices." The 42 cities that responded to the USCM survey reported having over 79,000 vacant and abandoned properties, and 71 percent of survey participants reported that the number of such properties in their locales has increased as a result of the current foreclosure crisis. The same percentage of respondents reported that they anticipate their local mortgage foreclosure problem to escalate over the next year. Anticipating the eventual provision of incremental federal funding to address the crisis, 61 percent of respondents indicated they would use such funds to acquire impacted properties. Over half of respondents (56 percent and 54 percent, respectively) said they would use new federal funds to clean up land and rehabilitate structures or to demolish structures on purchased properties.
