Marco Bontje, Sako Musterd and Peter Pelzer: Inventive city-regions: path dependence and creative knowledge strategies

This book on the role of 'creative knowledge strategies' in urban and regional development perhaps reflects-in its set-up, conceptual argument as well as empirical focus-a certain weariness with research on the creative industries and creativity. It is, in short, a book published after the early 2000s hype. This was a particular moment in time in which New Labour in the United Kingdom proclaimed the creative industries to be the new driving economic force and in which Richard Florida in the United States celebrated creativity and the creative class. Although these debates have not disappeared, the hype did not last and the debate on creativity has increasingly merged with related debates on innovation, the knowledge economy, and the role of services. This has had positive as well negative effects, both of which can be observed in this book.
