Most readers of this journal know that "neighborhood effects" means that living in a poor neighborhood adversely affects individuals' life chances over and above what would be expected based on their personal characteristics and circumstances and that moving to a "mixed" neighborhood with less poverty would lead to social mobility. Acceptance of the neighborhood effects hypothesis has led to the implementation of HOPE VI and the Moving to Opportunity (MTO) demonstration in the US and similar programs throughout the developed world. Neighborhood Effects Research edited by Maarten van Ham, David Manley, Nick Bailey, Ludi Simpson and Duncan Maclennon shows that the evidentiary base for social mixing is surprisingly thin, that neighborhood effects research is at a crossroads and that moving the field forward will be costly and complicated.
