摘要

It is not surprising that Wilbur Zelinsky, professor emeritus of geography at Pennsylvania State University, has crafted another book-length survey of the cultural geography of the USA. Not Yet a Placeless Land is an extension (and sometimes revision) of his previous work in The Cultural Geography of the United States (Prentice Hall, 1973; revised 1992) and Nation into State (University of North Carolina Press, 1988). Zelinsky assesses the homogenizing forces of globalization, technology, and centralized government on US social traditions and historic cultural landscapes. He discusses many examples of both increased uniformity and enhanced diversity in the USA, reaching the conclusion that the USA is simultaneously being buffeted by the forces of placelessness and place-making.
