Swinging City: A Cultural Geography of London, 1950-1974

Simon Rycroft is one of geography's most astute commentators on the historical geographies of the recent past, specializing in cultural scenes-especially that of the 1960s. Joining his many articles is now a valuable monograph that collects together some of his existing papers with new material to focus on Swinging London over the 'long' 1960s. To start somewhat unconventionally at the end of the volume, Rycroft's conclusion, whilst brief, does elucidate the three key themes that braid together the seven empirical chapters that form the core of the book: 1960s London, visions, and representation. Reading the volume through these three themes, highlights both the skill of Rycroft's handling and synthesis of his wide ranging body of material, as well as helping to concretize the contributions this text makes to geographical and wider scholarship on this era, and on creative scenes more generally.
