Modern Cargo Tank Construction

Transportation of hazardous materials in cargo tanks in the United States (US) is a very common and economical way to transport large quantities of hazardous materials. The hundreds of thousands of cargo tanks transporting hazardous materials in the US transport a large variety of liquids and gasses that are essential to our economy. The two most common liquids transported, gasoline and diesel fuel, are vital to daily lives and prosperity of our county. Just like any other package used in the transportation of hazardous materials, cargo tanks are required to be built to specifications dictated by the United States Department of Transportation (US DOT). The DOT currently has 5 different specifications for current construction of hazardous materials cargo tanks. These different specification cargo tanks are used for the various gasses and liquids being transported as required by the 49 CFR Part 172.101 hazardous materials table. A cargo tank is simply a large package to transport hazardous materials, just like a 55-gallon drum, IBC, or cylinder. There are also several older specifications of cargo tanks that are no longer authorized for new construction. While these older specification cargo tanks have been retired from currently being manufactured, they are still authorized to be used in transportation of hazardous materials.
