摘要

The authors have presented the findings of a laboratory and field study that led to the development of design and construction guidelines for the use of deep soil mixing (DSM) technology to stabilize expansive soils that exist at depth. The DSM technology was developed in Japan in the 1960s with its primary application to achieve significant improvement of the mechanical and physical properties of existing soft soils by increasing shear strength, reducing compressibility and permeability of these soils by the in situ mixing of the soil with cement or compound binders using a special mixing tool. Since its development, this technique has been applied in various parts of the world and to a variety of natural and contaminated soil types. However, its use in the stabilization of stiff to very stiff expansive soils is relatively new and has been the subject of research at the University of Texas at Arlington, the findings of which have led to this and other related publications on the subject by the authors and other researchers.
