'We're still in the process of picking ourselves up off the floor after witnessing firsthand the fact that a 16-year-old YouTuber can deliver us 3 times the traffic in a couple of days that some excellent traditional media coverage has over 5 months' (Michael Fox, founder of Shoes of Prey, cited in Mature Social Media 2014). For the purpose of this article I will define social media simply as a social instrument used for communication and sharing information over the Internet. Strengths of popular social media sites are those that nurture relationships and make meaningful connections in a way that encourages community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration. Some widely used social media sights where machinima is most often used and has become popular include YouTube, blogs, Facebook, Vimeo and Flickr to name a few. Machinima, like other social media tools, can get great mileage through further sharing, forwarding and reposts, and the interaction can be expressed via comments, responses, tagging, voting, adding friends, following, subscribing, joining groups and eliciting discussions. Social media sites are generally interactive in some way. Machinima fits well in some of the most popular social media sites as they are often relatively short and to the point, which is a common social media marker. For machinima to be seen, one needs 'to work it' across platforms.
