Volume 71 of the Journal of Food Protection, published in 2008, contained 2,636 pages and 367 articles, which included 356 research papers (including research notes), and 13 review and general interest papers (Table 1). By comparison, volume 70 published in 2007 contained 2,983 pages and 404 articles, which consisted of 389 research papers and 15 review and general interest papers. Thus, Volume 71 contained 37 fewer articles than Volume 70. Despite the large number of papers published, the average length of time between receipt of manuscripts and their publication was reduced in 2008 compared with 2007. More than 50, 79, and 93% of the manuscripts accepted for publication were in print within 8, 10, and 12 months of submission, respectively. The average time from submission to publication was approximately 9 months. The online manuscript handling system for the Journal continues to contribute to a reduced time to publication. The primary reasons for publication of articles more than 12 months following submission are delays by authors in revising manuscripts, reading proofs, or submitting appropriate paperwork.
