The suitability of using waste fired clay brick, of the average grade locally produced in Egypt, in manufacturing masonry units has been investigated. The basic properties of crushed brick concrete have been obtained and compared with those of limestone concrete for different cement contents and water/cement ratios. The experimental program was designed to determine the cube compressive strength at 7, 28, and 60 days, splitting tensile strength, modulus of rupture, and the concrete performance when exposed to elevated temperature. Test results indicate that using crushed brick as aggregate can yield concretes with 28-day compressive strength ranging from 10.8 to 28.9 N/mm~2. For the same level of 28-day compressive strength, concrete with coarse and fine crushed brick aggregates has a higher tensile strength compared to limestone concrete.Crushed brick concrete has better performance when exposed to elevated temperature. Two samples of masonry units were manufactured in a small factory using crushed-fired bricks. The test results show that crushed brick units can attain a compressive strength up to 22 N/mm~2. They have good performance compared to concrete brick and clay brick of the average grade commercially available and their properties satisfy ESS requirements. Their performance when exposed to elevated temperature is better than concrete brick.
