Unlocking Oil and Gas Reserves in the Arctic Ocean: Is there a Conventional Solution to Delimitation of the Maritime Boundaries?

Contrary to the impression given by media reports, the Arctic Ocean is not 'a twenty first century incarnation of the wild west'.203 Far from being a lawless frontier, the Arctic Ocean and its adjacent seas are governed by the provisions, or at least the norms reflected in the provisions, of one of the most successful Conventions ever produced. Within the legal framework provided by UNCLOS, the Arctic states can cooperate to resolve all of the outstanding maritime boundary issues in the Arctic Ocean and create the jurisdictional certainty required for resource exploitation.
