AIST Research Group Realizes 'Touchable 3D Images'

A research group under the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) was able to develop the "i~3Space," a system that presents a tactile sensation (sense of touch) and a kinesthetic sensation (resistance) in the air when a user views 3D images. The system, which was developed by Norio Nakamura, Senior Research Scientist, Human Ubiquitous-Environment Interaction Group of the Human Technology Research Institute under the AIST, enables users to design shapes of objects, and at the same time touch them. The i~3Space has been developed by combining three-dimensional (3D) TV and the small, non-base haptic interface using sensory illusion.
