INFORMATION REPRESENTATION AND RETRIEVAL IN THE DIGITAL AGE

In the preface to the second edition of Heting Chu's Information Representation and Retrieval in the Digital Age, the author explains the factors that compelled her to write a new edition of the book. The primary reason was time. Chu notes that nearly eight years had passed since she completed the first edition, practically a lifetime in the field of information retrieval (IR). Furthermore, after the first edition was published in 2003, numerous reviews of the book were written, many containing suggestions as to how it could be improved. Chu cites the necessity for update and revision as the impetus to write the second edition. As in the first edition, her goal is "to present a systematic, thorough, yet nontechnical view" of information representation and retrieval. Chu achieves this by writing in plain language and organizing her book in a logical manner.
