A free society is always precariously balanced between the competing desires for freedom and security. Based on the events of 9-11 and the discovery of certain types of technical information used in preparation for the attack on the World Trade Center towers, as well as the open access to training in the use of that technical information, certain predictions may be entertained. Future governments may conclude that much more of what we write about technology has national security interests. . . . Future governments may therefore argue to classify and prohibit the general publication of far greater ranges of information out of a concern that non-governmental organizations might develop ways to use it in acts of war or terror against the United States and its citizens.
