摘要

After my freedom as an undergraduate at the London School of Economics it was a shock to experience the organisation of an American University, even in the Graduate School... Harvard, at least in those days, was a magnet attracting some of the ablest students and best teachers in the country and I derived the keenest kind of pleasure in working with young, eager and outstandingly able minds. Generally, my best students came from high schools, particularly of the Middle West, as unfortunately the product of the famous New England private schools was generally afraid of being known as a "grind". He had to curb whatever natural impulse he had to be an outstanding student, one handicap at least the public school graduates were spared. For those whose tastes and pleasures were predominantly intellectual, therefore, the environment at Harvard was almost ideal.
