This book introduces an innovative methodology and utilizes it to study an important problem framed in a novel way. It uses what the authors call financial diaries of low-income households in India, Bangladesh, and South Africa to understand the financial lives of people living in poverty. The authors find that their respondents lead surprisingly active and complex financial lives, not in spite of but because of their precarious position.
