摘要

As George Bush's unfortunate use of the word 'Crusade' has shown, medievalism remains a powerful and emotive force in Western culture. Any book throwing new light on medievalist discourses is therefore to be welcomed, and the present work claims to be the first attempt to write a coherent brief history of the Medieval Revival as a whole. It is therefore with enthusiasm that one turns its pages.rnAs he frequently explains, Alexander is a specialist in medieval and modern English literature, and on this level, the book does have real interest. His close reading of Scott, showing the latter's use of his medieval (and other) source material (pp. 41-61) and his analysis of Tennyson's transformation of Malory (pp. 117-26) are fascinating for the non-specialist-and it is clear from his asides that the author expects his readership to be non-specialist.
