Most recent publications on the domestic interior consist of a number of essays of quite diverse kinds, contributed by authors from equally diverse backgrounds. In this case, however, the essays could not cohere more strongly; they simply deal with the standard rooms of the house, one by one. I do not know of a recent text which presents such a complete overview. Hence Domestic Interiors provides a most welcome counterbalance to the more heavily theorised kinds of texts, which tend to emphasise a unified notion of inferiority. But this also leads one to voice an initial reservation, the only one, in fact: Why could the principal feature of this book, 'made up of rooms' (p. 1), not have been announced in its title or sub-title?
