摘要

In his afterword to Anni Albers's newly re-released seminal book On Weaving, Nicholas Fox Weber, director of the Albers Foundation and a long-time friend of the Alberses, recounts how he once confessed to Anni that he wanted to write a book about her work but knew nothing about weaving. The next time they met, Albers surprised him with a hand-crafted loom made of a Lord & Taylor box, strings and balsa sticks, and used this improvised device to patiently explain the structure of warp and weft to Weber. 'I did not know at the time', he writes, 'that Anni was the wizard of the twelve-harness loom, that she developed techniques that to this day have experts baffled by their inventiveness. But I really understood what it was to start at zero' (p. 213). On Weaving similarly accommodates those starting at zero, while simultaneously serving as the quintessential source for scholars and enthusiasts of Albers's work and artistic philosophy.
