Little is known about the influence of maternal antibodiesand immune cells transferred through colostrumon the immune responses of calves to the currentlyused foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccines. Here weevaluated the humoral and cellular immune responsesinduced by vaccination of colostrum-deprived calvesand calves that received equivalent amounts of colostrumpreparations that differed in the presence or absenceof maternal immune cells but contained the samequantity and quality of anti-foot-and-mouth diseasevirus (FMDV) antibodies. Three groups of 32-d-oldcalves (n = 3 per group) were deprived of colostrumand fed either whole immune colostrum or a cell-freecolostrum preparation containing only anti-FMDV antibodies.All groups were immunized with 1 dose of anoil-adjuvanted commercial vaccine. Blood samples werecollected periodically before vaccination and weeklyafter vaccination. Immune responses specific to FMDVwere assessed based on T-cell proliferation, IFN-γproduction, total and neutralizing serum antibodies,and isotype profile. All vaccinated calves developedIFN-γ and lymphoproliferative responses, irrespectiveof the colostrum received. Colostrum-deprived animalsresponded to vaccination with a primary IgM responsefollowed by an increase of IgG_1 titers. Conversely, antibodytiters decreased in all colostrum-fed calves aftervaccination. This study demonstrates for the first timethat maternal immune cells transferred to the calvesthrough colostrum do not modify immune responsesto FMD vaccine, and it confirms the interference ofmaternal antibodies in the induction of humoral butnot cell-mediated immune responses.
