There are two clear, immediate benefits to be found in the new guideline. First, it will be much easier for advisers to predict the likely sentence of any given offender according to his or her role and the quantity of drugs involved. Secondly, the guideline provides a more structured and systematic approach to sentencing than that which existed under the previous case law and guidance-and this should inevitably lead to a more consistent approach to the sentencing of drugs cases in the UK.
