Erhard Eppler became the Federal Republic's Minister for Economic Cooperation (the ministry being the German equivalent of the British Department for International Development) during the 1960s Grand Coalition, continuing in that role in the Social Democratic-led government under Willy Brandt. When he did not continue in that post under Chancellor Schmidt, he became head of the SPD's Commission for Basic Values, his 17-year tenure underlining his importance to the party as a political thinker, as reflected in his numerous publications. It is also important to note that, like the first two SPD Federal Presidents Gustav Heinemann and Johannes Rau, he came to social democracy in the 1950s by way of the All German People's Party, which was set up by Christians who were unhappy with the rearmament policy of Chancellor Konrad Adenauer of the Christian Democratic Union.
