摘要

Turkey must surely represent one of the most intriguing enigmas of the modern geo-political scene, standing as it does as a front-line state at the centre of multiple challenging dilemmas. It is a long-standing member of NATO and it is host to over 3 million refugees mainly produced by the bloodbath which is the Syrian civil war, yet its current leadership is in frequent disagreement with its Western allies. The growing authoritarian nature of that leadership, under President Erdogan, is putting in jeopardy its long-standing alliance with the U.S.A., with a fragile EU and many Western neighbours. In addition, it is not clear whether the U.S.A., under its new president, will decide to continue to lead the international liberal order it has sustained for a century.
