There are still many people alive today who recall the incredulity - indeed disbelief - as the first Pathe newsreel images began to emerge in the Spring of 1945 of the allied victory in Europe, exposing the unspeakable horrors of the concentration camps and the skeletal, flattened remains of bombed-out German cities; images seared indelibly on the memories of a generation. How could anything positive ever emerge from the chaos of this 'victory'?
