Unless faced with something that is unremittingly abysmal, most reviewers will seek to say something positive before making any criticisms relating to the book in question. In this instance, I shall not follow this custom, although it is not a case of criticism directed at the editors and contributors to this volume but criticism emanating from them. Sadly, a recurring theme throughout is criticism of prevailing educational policy, not least in the United Kingdom, and in particular by the attitude in that country towards modern foreign languages. In this latter case, on the evidence presented, the word 'abysmal' seems entirely appropriate.
