Dialectics, Dogmas, and Dissent: Stories from East German Victims of Human Rights Abuse

The interest, both scholarly and popular, in the former German Democratic Republic is not waning, even twenty years since the political unification in Germany in 1991. In a survey conducted by the Leipzig Institute for Market Research in 2009, a rather alarming 12 per cent of those asked claimed that they would like to see a return of the Berlin Wall. And, at the recent Berlinale film festival in February 2012, the director who won the Silver Bear for best direction did so for a film which details the mundaneness and everyday oppression in the GDR (Barbara).
