European Cinema After the Wall: Screening East-West Mobility

This volume of 10 essays is preceded by an Introduction, which locates it in disciplinary terms at the intersection of Film and European Studies and also makes the specific claim that 'one of its strengths' is 'its truly transnational perspective' (p. xv). The back cover seeks to explain this by saying that the term 'transnational European cinema' applies not only to joint productions, a number of which are discussed, but also to a 'growing focus on multi-ethnic themes within the European context'. Whilst this focus is found in many of the films discussed, there are exceptions where the responses of certain national film industries to the mass migrations since the fall of the Berlin Wall have been anything but truly transnational, if that term implies a sensitive awareness towards different kinds of people and cultures.
