Reply to the comment by James E. Smith on ‘Dependence of hydraulic and pneumatic characteristics of soils on a dissolved organic compound' by Dury et al. [J. Contam. Hydrol. 33 (1998) 39-57]

We are gratefully indebted to Dr. J.E. Smith for giving the hint to an embarrassing error in our paper (Dury et al., 1998) which had escaped our attention. When we performed the fitting, we also included the measurements for pure butanol in the input file, overlooking that the two equations given below were meant to apply only to low concentrations. Although we later realized this restriction, it escaped to our attention in the final preparation of the manuscript that the fits were still accounting for the measurements of the pure butanol. As we had not been happy with the fits, however, we only used the measured values for the further calculations in the paper. So, at least this error fortunately has no implications on the other results given in the paper.
