When Species Meet

Donna Haraway provides this provocative statement on the first page of her newest book. It encompasses the essence of what this book is about, sinking into the dirt of the complexity of living entwined with other species. This is not clean, pristine theory of the sky but instead lays in the mud and knots of bodies. She seeks to answer two questions throughout the book: "(1) Whom and what do I touch when I touch my dog? and (2) How is 'becoming with' a practice of becoming worldly?" (Haraway, 2008, p. 3). Her answer to the second question is through mutual response and respect. She uses an assortment of methods throughout the book to show the readers what mutual response and respect look like in practice, including personal narrative, interviews, and engagement with theorists from a variety of fields ranging from biology to cultural studies.
