摘要

Although the Republic of China (R.O.C.) was overthrown on the Chinese mainland in 1949, it has survived since then on the island of Taiwan, struggling against the People's Republic of China (RR.C.) established by the Chinese communists on the other side of the Taiwan Strait. There have been many theories explaining why the R.O.C. on Taiwan can survive, such as the R.O.C.'s siding with the U.S. and Japan to balance the RR.C, its lobbying in Washington which results in strong support of the U.S. Congress for Taiwan, the modernization of its armed forces with the U.S. help, etc.
