By the early 1990s, China had started receiving the benefits of its policy of reform and opening up, which was launched in the late 1970s by the post-Mao leadership led by Deng Xiaoping. As a result, China's economy progressed with an unprecedented nine percent growth rate, and its diplomatic profile expanded extensively. In the diplomatic arena, China outflanked Taiwan and established diplomatic relations with most of the countries in the world. These achievements prompted Chinese leaders to devise a new policy in line with country's growing economic, diplomatic, and military clout. In this book, Zhiqun Zhu has examined the nature and dynamics of this new Chinese policy towards six key regions of the world, namely Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, Central Asia, the South Pacific, and Southeast Asia. While doing so, he analyzed why China needed a new policy, how it was implemented and what was international response.
