This book makes for very timely reading in light of the recent power transition in China. Since 1992, the themes of the top leader's speeches at the Central Party School just prior to the National Congresses have proved identical to their Political Reports to the two Congresses, the most influential delegates to which are the audience of the School meetings. The special status associated with the venue is indicative of the ascending role and influence of the School, and especially "the increasing prominence of Hu Jintao at the Centre from 1992 onwards".
