In Small Works, John Donaldson presents two exceptional cases to the conventionally accepted relationship between poverty reduction and economic growth. In spite of similar demographic and geographical characteristics, the two neighboring Chinese provinces Guizhou and Yunnan have experienced diverging trajectories of economic growth and poverty reduction. Since the 1990s, Guizhou's economy has been growing slowly, while poverty has been declining. In contrast, Yunnan has been able to grow rapidly in economic terms, but with only a few people emerging from poverty.
