This book examines the puzzle of why Taiwan's economic policy towards China changes frequently and often appears "irrational". Using national identity as the key explanatory variable, Syaru Shirley Lin meticulously traces Taiwan's economic policy from Lee Teng-hui's administration to Ma Ying-jeou's presidency, and attempts to analyze what has caused the oscillation between enthusiastically embracing the Mainland market and erecting political barriers to doing business in China, or moving between extensive liberalization and extensive restriction.
