Introduction to the Symposium Issue

This symposium issue starts with eight papers from the 9th Dubrovnik Economic Conference that was held in June 2003 with the sponsorship of the Croatian National Bank. This Dubrovnik conference program was devoted to financial sector issues in transition and emerging market economies. The issue also includes four papers from a related symposium, a panel co-sponsored by the Association for Comparative Economic Studies and the American Economic Association at the January 2002 meetings of the Allied Social Science Associations entitled "Monetary Convergence of the EU Candidates". A brief description of the papers from the Dubrovnik conference is presented here followed by a similar discussion of the symposium on monetary convergence.
