Karol Tchorek: the artist's archives and the contemporary problems with socialist realism

The image of today's Warsaw has been shaped by the post-war period and the social and political concepts of the People's Republic of Poland (PRL), executed through town planning, architecture and public art. Western tourists are fascinated by the leading works of socialist realism such as The Palace of Culture and Science, and the MDM (the Marszatkowska Housing Estate): the younger generation of Poles are becoming more and more interested in not just socialist realism, but also modernism in the PRL. However, architecture and public art created in communist Poland still remain an area which has not been thoroughly explored by Polish art historians.
